Course Content

The Beginning Taekwondo course is a comprehensive introductory overview meant for students of all levels and physical ability. No previous experience is necessary and those with past training in Taekwondo or other martial arts who wish to expand or polish their basics are also encouraged to participate. The technique level will progress to the equivalent of one colored belt above beginning, ie: typically Yellow Belt. This course is taught at moderate physical intensity so that all participants can comfortably tailor their training to their own ability and a level that will maximize their enjoyment and progress. Aspects of health, self-defense, sport, Taekwondo's history and philosophy, and self-development are integrated into the curriculum to enhance the student experience beyond physical practice.

Techniques

Basic kicking, stances, blocks, and strikes will be taught to a basic level of proficiency. Once basics are established, curriculum will progress into interactive partner drills, combination drills and one poomsae (solo form). There is NO free-sparring taught or allowed in association with beginning Taekwondo.

 

Health and Safety

Each class will begin with thorough warm-up to ensure performance and safety. Students will learn proper integration of strength, aerobic capacity, and flexibility through Taekwondo to achieve good physical health. Students will be taught proper use of dynamic, ballistic, and static stretching as well as limited instruction on standing meditation and breath control.

 

Course Materials and Facilities

No materials are required for Beginning Taekwondo. Students are encouraged to wear loose, movable clothing. The course is taught in the ARC Martial Arts room on a matted floor for safety and comfort. Shoes are never allowed on the mats in order to protect the surface and ensure proper hygiene.

Course Expectations and Grading

Class attendance with a maximum of three unexcused absences per quarter

Minimum attendance is required for a passing (P) grade.

In addition, technical and tactical skill development is assessed and supported throughout the quarter.

 

Participation in all techniques and drills

Participants will be asked to work both individually and with rotating partners in co-active and interactive activities. Material is built on a progression from basic techniques to integrated skills. Good attendance will assure successful progression.

Participation in a mandatory skill assessment "final"

The final will be delivered on the last scheduled day of instruction. It is meant as a practical skill assessment and opportunity for students to receive one-on-one feedback from a grading panel of qualified Taekwondo blackbelts. Material on the final will be a pre-determined short list including one selected kick, one individual form, and one partner set. Participation is all that's necessary to pass the final and is required for a passing (P) grade in the course.

A Positive Attitude

Students should enjoy the physical practice, partner interaction, and positive social structure of the Taekwondo environment.

 

 

There are risks and dangers inherent in participating and/or in receiving instruction in a PE-1 activity course.  Injury resulting from participation is always a possibility in physical activity.  Please carefully follow the guidelines provided by your instructor.  Please notify your instructor immediately if you become injured or ill, or otherwise expressly indicated by the student, the assumption is that the student is in good health and is capable of participating in all facets of physical activity related to this class.
