Rock Climbing (Intermediate)

Description

Purpose
The course is designed to teach lead rock climbing to the general student population. The emphasis will be on correct clipping and lead belaying techniques, instruction on climbing skill, as well as safety awareness and proper use of climbing equipment. The student must have sound basic rock climbing skills such the ability to tie a figure eight, proper belaying skills and a strong climbing ability.

Grading Procedure
A passing grade will be given based on attendance, participation, effort and knowledge of safety rules. Students are allowed (3) absences during the quarter . Consistent attendance is encouraged. Basic climbing foot- work will be taught in sequent classes, so that missing class may hamper the student’s progress. Persistent tardiness may also result in a No/Pass Grade. In addition, technical and tactical skill development is assessed and supported throughout the quarter.

Safety
Climbing is inherently risky with the possibility of severe injury. Safety standards established by the instructor and included in the Safety handout must be adhered to. Failure to do so will result in restriction from the course.

Suggested Prerequisites
Climbing requires some basic strength and flexibility to enhance the learning process. Courses, such as Weight Training. Yoga and Gymnastics can be beneficial. A general condition program would be a good prerequisite as well.

Inherent Risk
There are risks and dangers inherent in participating and/or receiving instruction in a PE 1, activity course. Injury resulting from participation is always a possibility in physical activity. Please carefully follow the guidelines provided by your instructor and adhere to any rules established by the instructor. Please notify your instructor immediately if you become injured or ill, or feel that you shouldn’t participate in a given activity. 
Unless otherwise expressly indicated by the student, the assumption is that the student is in good health and is capable of participation in all facets of the physical activity related to this class.
