Tai Chi (Intermediate)

Description

I.  Tai Chi Course Description:
This course explores the traditional Chinese exercise of Tai Chi Chuan.  It provides for the development of basic skills and techniques that lead toward an integration of the mind-body-spirit trilogy.  Various Chinese fitness exercises in relation to health are explored.  Principles of Confucianism and Taoism, including a basic review of Tai Chi history and philosophy are discussed.  Overall, the physical discipline and structure of Tai Chi movements are emphasized.  The level of difficulty is relatively high, providing a very complete type of bodily training.


II. Purpose of the Class:

This course is designed to accommodate the beginner’s level.  The emphasis will be placed on establishing a solid foundation of fundamentals.  This course will enhance internal strength and energy while improving one’s balance, vitality, and stamina.  As an added feature, Tai Chi Chuan will often relieve inner stress and help calm one’s mind.


III. Objectives:

•Learn the fundamentals as a good prerequisite for perform of Tai Chi Chuan. 
•Learn the first eight movements of the simplified 24 forms。 
•Learn and practice Chinese language (terminology) for each movement of Tai Chi Chuan. •Be able to demonstrate Tai Chi forms for each skill set.


IV. Daily Class Procedures and Processes:

Each class session begins with warm-up exercises and stretches.  This warm-up will enhance flexibility and reduce the chance of injury.  Students will need to be punctual in order to receive the full benefits of the warm-ups.        
Through lecture, discussion, demonstration, and student participation, the beginner skill sets of Tai Chi Chuan movements will be taught and practiced during the class.  All students are encouraged to actively participate and to engage in active learning.   
Prior to class ending, there is a cool down period to assist the students in this process.


V.  Proper Attire for Class:

Students are encouraged to come to each class in comfortable attire that permits for flexibility, comfort, warmth, and movement.  Shoes with non-scuffing soles and with appropriate supports are encouraged.


VI. Grading Procedures:

•Grades will be awarded based on the student’s participation, effort, and attendance.  
•There are no skill tests that affect your grade; however, class attendance is the criteria used to determine the Pass/No Pass class for 0.5 units of credit, and you will be expected to demonstrate the movements and Mandarin in relation to the Tai Chi movements you have been taught. 
•Students are allowed three (3) absences during the Quarter. Arriving more than 10 minutes late will count as an absence.  Further absences must be approved by the instructor. Students are allowed to make up classesunder special circumstances, or by prior arrangement with the instructor. 
•Consistent attendance is encouraged and essential for positive progress; progressions of each of the skills will be taught in sequence and regular attendance will enhance your learning process. 
•PE 1 classes do not meet during exam week.


VII. Class Rules and Requirements:

•Be on time. 
•Do not leave early. 
•Sign in. If you do not sign in, you may be considered absent. 
•Mutual respect towards the instructor and towards each other will be maintained at all times. 
•No talking with other students when the class is in session and instruction is occurring. Everyone must pay attention in order to learn and to do his or her best. 
•No food or drink in the classroom. •Guest will only be allowed with prior permission.


VIII. Safety Notification:

There are risks and dangers inherent in participating and/or receiving instruction in a P.E. activity course.  Injury resulting from participation is always a possibility in physical activity.  Steps taken in warm-up and in cool-down assist in reducing such possibilities.    
Please notify your instructor immediately if you become injured or ill, or feel that should not participate in a certain activity.        
Unless otherwise expressly indicated by the student, the assumption is that the student is in good health and is capable of participating in all facets of the physical activity related to this class. 
Learning to Tai Chi Chuan well and master the techniques take time, patience and effort. You will also find that on an average you should spend about two hours per week practicing the forms that you have been taught in class. This includes doing the warm-up and cool-down exercises in order to increase flexibility and to prevent injury.
