Description

Equipment: rackets and birds are to be checked out from your respective locker room and returned at the end of class.

Clothing: gym shorts, t-shirts and tennis shoes are required. No jeans, running shoes or aerobic shoes. Sweats are fine.

Lockers: you may check out a locker with a registration card.

Grading: must attend 17 of 20 classes to receive a passing grade. Note: ENWS grades will no longer be given! In addition, technical and tactical skill development is assessed and supported throughout the quarter.

Level: This course is for beginners only. If your skill level is too high for this class you may be asked to join another section.

Class goals: The basic strokes of badminton will be taught - the overhead and underhand clear, drop and net drop, smash, and serve. Scoring, doubles positioning and strategy will also be covered. One half of each class will be spent developing skills and the other half playing games. Match play will be doubles only unless space allows otherwise. The main goals of the class are to learn how to play badminton and to have fun!

Class procedure: class starts on the hour with roll call, a jog and stretching. An instruction will then be given by myself and/or my TA on a particular stroke or strategy. The students will then pair up and work on that stroke with individual help from the instructors. The last part of each class will be devoted to playing games.

Expectations: You are expected to be on time, to attend at least 85% of the classes (ie. you are allowed three unexcused absences) and to do your best.

Make up policy: You are allowed to make up no more than two absences. Only one make-up can be made each week.

Illness Policy: If you are sick or injured for an extended period of time you will need a doctor’s note to verify your illness/injury.
